Blizzard Entertainment has announced the cancellation of BlizzCon 2024, an event traditionally known for its major game announcements and fan celebrations. The decision, shared on Blizzard’s official website, comes after a year of deliberation, reflecting a shift in how the company plans to present its upcoming titles.

The company assured fans that while BlizzCon will not take place this year, it is not gone for good. Blizzard plans to explore new ways to engage with its community and showcase its games in the coming months. “After careful consideration over the past year, we at Blizzard have made the decision not to hold BlizzCon in 2024,” stated the announcement. Fans can look forward to the event’s return in future years with fresh experiences and interactions.

BlizzCon 2024 is canceled, Blizzard will hold other events

Blizzard Entertainment has decided to skip its annual fan convention, BlizzCon, in 2024. Instead of the traditional large-scale event, Blizzard plans to host a series of smaller events throughout the year and will participate in major trade shows like Gamescom.

2024 is a significant year for Blizzard as it marks the 30th anniversary of World of Warcraft. In celebration, Blizzard is organizing “multiple, global, in-person events” and will release updates on major expansions for its leading games, including World of Warcraft’s 10th expansion, The War Within, and Diablo IV’s first expansion, Vessel of Hatred.

A Blizzard representative clarified to PC Gamer that the decision to cancel BlizzCon was made by Blizzard and not by Microsoft, which acquired the company last year. “This is a Blizzard decision,” the representative said. We have explored different event formats in the past, and this isn’t the first time we’re skipping BlizzCon or trying something new. While we have great things to share in 2024, the timing just doesn’t line up for one single event at the end of the year.”

Blizzard reassured fans that, while BlizzCon will not take place this year, it is committed to bringing the event back in the future. “While we’re approaching this year differently and as we have explored different event formats in the past, rest assured that we are just as excited as ever to bring BlizzCon back in future years.”

BlizzCon 2024 Canceled Amid Blizzard’s Challenges

BlizzCon event on the stage

Since its start in 2005 BlizzCon has been a highlight for Blizzard Entertainment fans. Every year, BlizzCon showcases major games such as Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo, Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm, and Overwatch. This annual convention has earned a reputation for offering exclusive previews, exciting game announcements, and competitive tournaments. It also provides a vibrant space for attendees to meet game developers, enjoy live concerts and participate in cosplay competitions.

Though, the much-loved event has had some problems lately mostly because of the COVID-19 outbreak. The 2020 event was scrapped and in 2021 it moved online to something called BlizzConline, which anyone could access for free. The disruptions continued with the cancellation of the 2022 convention amidst ongoing legal issues concerning workplace harassment within Activision Blizzard.

BlizzCon came back in person in 2023 at the Anaheim Convention Center, which was a sign of hope for a comeback. However, the event for 2024 has been scrapped. This move comes at a tough time for Blizzard. Earlier this year, a lot of employees were laid off as part of broader cuts across Microsoft’s gaming divisions, affecting 1,900 people. With the recent acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft and ongoing budget constraints within the industry, the financial prudence of hosting such a large-scale event has been called into question. As Microsoft navigates these rough times, it’s still not clear what BlizzCon will look like in the future.

In short

Blizzard has announced the cancellation of BlizzCon 2024 choosing instead to explore different formats for future events. Despite this year’s hiatus, the company plans to celebrate the 30th anniversary of World of Warcraft with multiple global events and will share updates on new expansions for WoW and Diablo IV. The decision reflects Blizzard’s adaptive approach in the wake of recent corporate changes and broader industry challenges, including significant layoffs at its parent company Microsoft. Fans can look forward to a wide range of Blizzard events that are meant to bring the community together and show off new features.
