Elon Musk, who owns X (which used to be called Twitter), is going to make it so that new users have to pay a fee to post on the platform. 

The goal of this change is to cut down on the number of automated bots on the network and improve the quality of interactions. By charging a small fee to post, Musk hopes to make sure that active users are genuine and engaged, which will improve the X experience for everyone.

Musk suggests charging new X users to combat bots

Elon Musk has come up with a new way to deal with the growing number of bots on X. He says that charging new users a small fee is the “only way” to solve the problem. He talked about how old tools like CAPTCHA don’t work anymore, saying that current Artificial intelligence (AI) and troll farms can easily get around these checks.

In a further conversation, Musk mentioned that this fee would only apply to new accounts for the first three months after their creation. Users could post again after this time without having to pay. 

How much does new users of X have to pay?

Elon Musk is thinking about charging new users of the X platform a fee, but he hasn’t said how much yet. Previously, in October 2023, the platform imposed a $1 annual fee on new unverified users in New Zealand and the Philippines. This fee meant that these users could only read posts and not interact with them further; they had to pay to post, repost, or reply. Some people think Musk might use the same fee system in other places as well.

At this point, Musk hasn’t said when or if the fee will be used by more people. New users can join X and post for free right now, which suggests that any changes to this strategy are still under consideration.

X steps up the removal of spam accounts and improves AI training

X just recently unveiled a major plan to get rid of spam accounts on its platform, warning users that their follower counts may drop. The move is part of a bigger plan to more effectively manage and reduce bot-related issues on the social media network. 

Elon Musk has made it clear that he wants to deal with the problems that AI bots cause. After updating its policies last year, X now lets public posts be used to train machine learning or AI models. Also, Musk said in July 2023 that his AI company, xAI, would use X’s public posts to improve their AI technologies. This integration shows that X is serious about using the data on its platform to help AI research and application.

xAI recently expanded access to its Grok chatbot, initially available to X’s higher-tier Premium+ subscribers at $16 per month. Now, premium users who pay $8 a month can use the chatbot. This change lowers the cost of powerful AI tools, so more people can use them on X. Additionally, last week Fortune disclosed plans from X to integrate Grok further, enabling users to use the chatbot to compose their posts directly on the platform. This new feature is part of X’s ongoing work to use new technology to improve how users connect with and create content.
