A new tool on Google’s Search platform is called “Speaking Practice” and it’s meant to help people improve their conversational English. The feature has changed since it was first released in October 2023 as a way to give feedback on specific spoken sentences.

Now, it enables users to engage in continuous conversations, therefore improving their language skills more dynamically. With this update, learners can practice speaking in dialogues that move more naturally, like they would in real life.

Google tests a new “Speaking Practice” feature

Google is testing a new tool in Search called “Speaking Practice” that is meant to help people improve their conversational English. People who are taking part in Search Labs in Argentina, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Mexico, and Venezuela can now use this tool. Search Labs is Google’s platform for users to try out early versions of Search innovations.

The main goal of this feature is to improve English language skills by letting users take part in interactive language learning tasks that are run by AI. The goal of these tasks is to help people use new words correctly in everyday conversations. As of now, the feature supports English language practice, offering users feedback and opportunities to engage in simulated dialogues. Google says that Search is a great tool for language learners because it makes it easy to find translations, meanings, and vocabulary.

A user on platform X (which used to be called Twitter) was the first to bring attention to the feature by posting screenshots of it in use. These screenshots show how to sign up and the different kinds of interactive exercises that are available. In these exercises, users can practice using certain words by responding to AI-generated conversational prompts. For example, the AI might initiate a dialogue about physical fitness and prompt the user to use words like “exercise,” “tired,” and “heart” in their responses.

There isn’t a set date for when this testing feature might be made available to everyone or in more places, but Google is still looking into ways to improve its language learning tools.

Could it compete with Duolingo and Babbel?

Google Expands Language Tools on phone

Google is improving its language tools so that they do more than just translate text. They are now offering a more organized way to learn languages. While well-known language learning apps like Duolingo and Babbel offer a leveled curriculum, Google’s new “Speaking Practice” tool is meant to help language learners pick the right words and conjugations for conversations. This new feature builds on Google’s existing translation services and its progress in using AI to understand more than one language.

Google has been dabbling with language learning since 2019 and the addition of “Speaking Practice” suggests that the company may be getting ready to be a major player in this market. In that year, Google added a speech practice tool to Search, which was the company’s first step toward making language-learning tools.

Learning a language with the help of AI is not a new idea. Duolingo was one of the first sites to do this, adding an AI chatbot in 2016. In the same way, Memrise has added a GPT-3-based chatbot to Discord, which is a fun new way to learn languages through discussion. This shows that digital language learning can take many forms.

In short

Google has introduced a new feature in its Search platform called “Speaking Practice” designed to help users improve their conversational English skills. Initially launched for feedback on specific sentences, it now supports ongoing dialogues that improve real-life conversational abilities. Available through Search Labs in select countries, this feature uses AI to provide interactive language exercises, making it a potential alternative to traditional language learning platforms like Duolingo and Babbel. Google is putting more and more effort into educational systems and language learning, as shown by this new tool.
