New Android 15 Feature to Show Remaining Storage Life

Android Authority reported a new feature, “Device Diagnostics,” in the latest beta version of Android 15. This feature shows users a percentage that shows how much of their internal storage is still in good working condition. The goal of this new tool is to help users better manage their device’s storage by letting them know about potential problems before they get too bad.

Under the new system, the Device Diagnostics feature relies on a newly introduced storage lifetime API within Android 15. This API checks the internal storage’s health and sends back a percentage. For example, if the API gives a value of 90, it means that 90% of the storage’s useful life is still left. This lets users know exactly how much longer they can depend on their current storage.

The first test version of Android 15 currently has this feature enabled, but it’s important to note that not all devices can use this new feature. In order for the diagnostics to work, the device must be able to receive certain health data through the Health HAL and let the Android system access this data. This API’s primary function is to display the remaining life of the memory chip. This gives users a simple way to check how long their device’s storage will last.

Google has integrated new code into the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), paving the way for the upcoming Android 15 release. This updated code includes a new API that improves upon the existing tools used for managing device idle times. The first patch for this API shows only minor changes from the last one.
